The Deer

She was sprawled across the tracks, her hind legs mangled from her first attempt. She could feel the train vibrating towards her as she lifted her head to stare into the bright lights.

The conductor saw the figure in the distance. There was time to stop. A hand pulled the lever, and the train began to slow.

The deer relaxed.

Brown eyes met green.

Too late she realised: it wasn’t going to stop.
